“Modern Society and the Quest for Human Happiness”
The article “Modern Society and the Quest for Human Happiness” presents an unexpected finding. According to Dalei Lama, people who live in developed countries are actually less happy than people who live in poor countries. Although, people with nothing do have physical pain and suffering, they are less anxious. This is suggested both by the high degree and by the disturbing prevalence among the population of the materially developed countries of anxiety, discontent, frustration, and depression.
One of statements of Dalei Lama points out in this article that I am very interested to that “They are so caught up with the idea of acquiring still more that they make no more for anything else in their lives.” People who live in modern society have become alienate from nature, and their relationships have become more around money and individual self- interest. Living in an abnormal life, looks like a doll without feeling. Blocking the view from their eyes, as if they acquire more wealth. As this author stated that retaining more wealth have to provide, in their absorption with material wealth, they actually lose the dream of happiness. Similarity, some people may not know how to use their wealth intelligently. Living in luxury do not want to share them with the need. Meanwhile, in the poor countries, people live a simple and regular life. Although they are plagued with physical, their faces fill with pleasures and happiness.
The United States President, Benjamin Franklin said, “money has never made happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants.” I agree with that people use an illegal way or behavior, and they get hurt someone who around them. These are not rich means. I think that the author explains that the real happiness means peace and sharing. That is true wealth.
This article described the problems of our society. People are striving to improve their lives why are unhappiness. However, people who live in the undeveloped countries more likely feel rich than others. This is because they know how to share and to feel the happiness.
